How old was Van Gogh when she died? ›

Van Gogh died in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, in 1890 aged 37. The Dutch master had been staying at the Auberge Ravoux inn from where he would walk to local wheat fields to paint. It has long been thought that he shot himself in a wheat field before returning to the inn where he later died.

Van Gogh was never famous as a painter during his lifetime and constantly struggled with poverty. He sold only one painting while he was alive: The Red Vineyard which went for 400 francs in Belgium seven months before his death. His most expensive painting Portrait of Dr. Gachet was sold for $148.6 million in 1990.

Van Gogh died in Auvers-sur-Oise on 29 July 1890. He is buried in the municipal cemetery next to his brother Theo. Both graves and the village, an outdoor museum with reproductions of his paintings (free map available from the Tourist Office) have become a pilgrimage for art lovers.

Is the Rijksmuseum worth visiting? If you like art and history, definitely. There's world-famous artwork by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh on display – including The Night Watch, a painting of magnificent scale – which makes the Rijksmuseum a holy site for art lovers.
